Two bad signs for newspapers: losing audience and losing ad revenue

The Pew Research Center’s state of the news media report has some good news for just about all the media, except newspapers.

First, online ad revenues are growing, but not anywhere near fast enough to offset losses in print ad revenues.

Second, audiences have been growing for all platforms, except — you guessed it — newspapers, as shown in this graphic from the report:

I desperately want newspapers, or at least the companies that own them, to succeed. I’ve read them since I was a child, and I’ve worked for them for three decades. But reports like this make it tough to stay optimistic.
