Turning inner space into outer space

Going wild with a Tumbler nature photography blog

When I post a wildlife photo on The Daily News Facebook page, I can count on the likes piling up within seconds. Without a doubt, the people of Kamloops love nature.

The trouble with Facebook, though, is that it is a timeline — as time goes by, the photos disappear with it. The solution? How about a tumblelog?

You can see my early efforts here. Using one of Tumblr’s free templates, I created a gallery that so far consists of eight recent nature photos taken by our two full-time photographers. I’ll add more as they become available.

A fault with this gallery template is that the thumbnails do some brutal crops on the vertical photos, making it hard to see what you’re getting into when you click. I might try a different template, or try messing around with the code.

In a addition to showcasing the nature photography of our own staff, I’m looking at the possibility of allowing other people’s pictures to be included as well. Also, there will likely be a way for people to order large, high-resolution prints.

If one nature photo is good, then a collection of them is great — or at least that’s the theory. We’ll see how it goes.
