Turning inner space into outer space

When a paywall works

There’s been a lot of debate over whether news sites should put up a paywall in order to turn a profit. Those moving in that direction are mostly going with a “leaky” paywall that allows a certain number of free visits before the wall goes up.

But there’s a news site in Nova Scotia that slams the door shut on anyone but subscribers. And it’s apparently working for them.

The secret of allNovaScotia.com is its tight focus on business and politics. They do a lot of digging and quite often come up with scoops. The 10 per cent who need to be in the know are willing to pay.

Nieman Journalism Lab has a great profile.
